Depends how far you want to take it and how much you want to spend

Cheap mods are lower it, paint the plastics gloss black

Any mod will affect your insurance
I would just keep it clean
Nice set of wheels maybe a slight drop

Most declared mods send insurance up a fair bit when your young.
Im not advising it in any way but I never declared any of my mods and I had my coilovers lowered more than the TUV approved limit.

When lowering my car can I just buy the springs or do I have to buy the whole lot?

You can just get the springs if your going
To -40mm any lower I would fit the shorter dampers
