Old man's gonna go racing

Post by Dodging »

Hey guys!

For a number of years now I've wanted to take part in proper wheel-to-wheel racing. I've done lots of time-trials, track days and sprints, but never anything serious. Every year I've been putting it off, but if I don't do it now I never will... Ain't getting younger you know

Anyway - let's talk about the car

About 4years ago I found a Corsa with a busted engine in the classifieds for a really good price.

So I went ahead and bought it, planning on using it as a fun little runabout that I could use for the odd event

So I next proceeded with building an engine for this cabbie. I got a couple of bits and pieces together and built it as follows:

1600 sub assy
1300 8v head
Throttle body from a 160i Astra (This one is slightly bigger than the ones we get on Corsas here in SA)
Injectors from a C20seh
270 cam
Aftermarket management

This setup was good for a healthy 70kw and 130nm on the wheels

Here's what it looked like at that stage.

Really didn't like the look and feel of the springs, so I fitted a set of Eibach springs. Also changed the wheels at the same time

I then had a little bit of a visit in a bush at a hillclimb event

Wasn't too serious - still competed afterwards and finished 2nd in my class

After that I pretty much did nothing to the car, apart from putting a 1600 head on in place of the 1300. With the high CR from the 1300 head I got a lot of knock, and eventually it broke the ring glands on 2 cylinders. I always expected it to do it, but I was amazed that it lasted as long as it did.

This brings us to about a month ago when the cambelt broke. At the same time I got a itch in my jeans and decided I want to go racing, and I wanted to do it with this car.

So I got the car into the garage, and started stripping it out. Didn't take too many pics, but here are a couple

This was where I was in terms of progress yesterday. It's always hard getting the time to work on the car with having a day job, but I try to get an hour in when I can

Been shopping up a storm though...

What I've bought so far:
New shocks (Unfortunately the series I'm entering prohibits the use of aftermarket shocks)
New springs I had made - should be here by tomorrow
New anti-roll bar for the front. Rear is not allowed by the rules if your car didn't have one from the factory
Poly mounts for everything in the front suspension, including top shock mounts
New brakes fromPowerbrake
Cobalt disk pads
Steel braided brake lines
Calipers from a 2l Astra F
New headlights
New front bumper
New CV boots
New steering wheel
New seats
Electrical cut-off switch plus cable and handle for outside
Ignition panel
Oil pressure, oil temp and water temp guages
Extra set of wheels
Set of Bridgestone semis that were on sale
