Hi, i have a 1998 (R) Vauxhall Corsa Merit 1.0 12v, my insurance is with churchill and i'm paying £2,200 a year fully comp (third party was dearer). I have always wondered what it would cost me if i had a bigger engine on the same car so i carried out some quotes on churchill's website. this is what i got:

Insurance quote used is for an 18 year old Student (male) on a Vauxhall Corsa 1998 with Merit Trim, The Insurance Quotes are for a 1.0 12v, 1.2 and a 1.4, all quotes used are fully comp!

Vauxhall Corsa Merit 1.0 12v 973cc = £2,213.40 pa or £194.76 pm

Vauxhall Corsa Merit 1.2 1195cc = £2,172.45 pa or £191.18 pm

Vauxhall Corsa Merit 1.4 1389cc = £2,152.50 pa or £189.42 pm

I got the 1.0 because i thought it would be cheaper on insurance, turns out i'm wrong, i tried to get a quote also for a 1.6 sport but churchill dont offer online quotes on cars with big engines.

Is there any particular reason why bigger engines are cheaper insurance? :?

It shouldnt work like that, they base the prices on the insurance class. The higher the class, the more they charge because their is supposedly more risk.
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Sum ... 989&page=4
As you can see, the 1.4s are a higher class than the 1.0's and 1.2,s although certain 1.2's and 1.0's are the same class. But if you didnt already know the 1.0 12v's have more bhp and are faster than the 1.2 8v's.

Hey I'm also with churchill and 18 (student).
I drive a 1.5TD Corsa and my Insurance is £1600 year or £132.00 a month.
I was looking at a 1.4 merit and i got a quote at £1300.
Your location can have a big affect on your quotes.

iv been on these comparison sites loads of times, they are more expensive, churchill quoted me £3,000 + on there where as direct it was £2,200, mine is a 12v so mine is going to be abit more expensive than the 8v but still, its not a huge difference. :(

First try Liverpool Victoria (i went with them first (was 20 when first took out insurance on my 1.0ltr)). Was fully comp, it was roughly £850 (Norwich union wanted £2000+

Only prob with Victoria is any mod you do including colour code your bumpers and they won't insure you.

Also try Adrian Flux. My quote with Liverpool Victoria 2 years ago went down from the previous year by like £20 to roughly £520. And that was with no mods.

I phoned Flux and they gave me a quote (with all my mods/mods getting ready to put on, in with the quote) and it was something like £450 and thats still fully comp etc.

Ok it's cheaper for me now as i'm 24 soon 25 but still worth trying.

Hope this helps

why not just use confused or compare the market (meerkat) dot com?

how are you managing to get quotes of that much? i got wen i 1st passed mi test about a grand on a 1 liter
how are you comming up with more than that?

dont pay for fully comp when you car wont cost that much to fix anyway
if u smash ur car you cant do more than £500 worth of damage to it, and if you do just buy another one!

Thats a point. So it works out cheaper to go TP or TPF&F.

it will do think about it your paying fully comp for insurance but why?
what would you do if u smashed it up yourself? you wouldnt claim because usualy your excess would cover it so why tell them and if you DID claim at 18 19yr old you will be paying for it till your 25!!
and if u smashed your car up so badly you would just buy another car and not bother telling insurance for same reason!

TPFT covers you if you have your car stolen thats really the only thing you need unless you own an expensive car
and if someone crashes in to you, you claim off their insurance for your car fixing not off your own

trust me you would be wating your time with fully comp unless you have a properly sorted car
a frend of mine has an old mk1 clio he pays f**k nose how much for fully comp insurance, he then crashed it in to a lampost
which cost him around £200 for it fixing, concidering he would have to pay £250 exsess before his insurance would pay out its more cost effective to fix it himself than involve them. therefor fully comp insurance is usless for him, ergo he is wasting his money
but he wont hear it

and no point going third party either..its more expensive as u dont pay any excess.
also u could try adding a named driver, that helps make it cheaper sometimes.

Well said dantheman
id say TPFT
keep in a garage or drive
social and commuting (unless you dont drive to work)
limit miles to say 7k a year
set excess as high as you can afford. (personaly id go for around £400)
add your parents as named drivers (unless they drive for a living or have loads of points or loads of accdents)

should bring it nice

lol done a quote for my old 1.0i beastie
£194.27 a year, quite nice with HSBC insurance
(wish my actual car was this cheap to insure)

oh and i did one as a 19yr old (as apposed to my real age of 25)
with no no clames, just passed test last month and i got: £927.83 from e-car insurance
so i have no clue how you lot are getting over 2k!

 maybe it's just my luck! :( yeah fully comp is cheaper, myquote for TPF&T was £200 dearer with Churchill although I believe it works differently with other providers

It's a shame nobody else in my family drives cause then I could add them to my policy, I could of had a 2008 golf GT otherwise :(
