Water Coolant replacement

Hi all,

Its coming to that time of the year when I need to clear out my existing coolant and put new coolant in.

I was wondering how does everybody go about it.

I have a 1.2 8V SOHC Corsa B Reg 1998.

Just on my car, you can never completely flush it all out due to the thermostat in the way.

As can be seen in the pic below.

i usually just take the bottom hose off the radiator lol
OFFICAL DVLA DATA:
1414 - corsa gsi's on the road in 2008.
735 - corsa gsi's currently on the road and 436 SORN
Basicly you would have to be a right tw*t to break one for parts :rant:

firstly flush out the radiator by removing the top/bottom hose,place a hose pipe in the top of the rad and flush till clean water can be seen coming from the bottom hose,to flush the engine,you must remove the thermostat,replace the thermostat housing and flush with hose pipe until water runs clean from bottom hose,remove thermostat housing,replace thermostat seal with a NEW one,re-connect all the hoses,top up the cooling system with clean water,run engine till hot,check for any leaks,allow engine to cool down,remove lower rad hose,drain system,replace hose and top up with required amount of anti freeze/water,run engine a check for any leaks,bleed any air that is in the system,top up as required.

gonna sound a silly question but ive just bought a Corsa B 1.7D and after a few weeks on the cleaning and restoring of the body and trim, ive started to do the mechanical end ( this is a learning curve for me). I've changed the oil, all 4 filters and topped up the coolant level. It was a nice blue in the coolant tank, as recommended, but when i turned the engine on, it quickly became murky. is this just a complete flush needed or more serious?

It's just old manky coolant left in the block and rad, it happens because when most people change the coolant they only drain half of it out so when it starts circulating all the dirty stuff mixes with your nice new coolant

You could flush the system out with clean water and then fill up with coolant, but the old stuff being mixed in won't do it any harm
If it doesn't fit,
force it,
If it breaks,
It needed replacing anyway :thumbs:

cheers johnny, i used the haynes manual and got it all flushed. couldnt find the thermostat tho..... would you have a picture of where it is on the engine?

The above link takes you to the parts manual for the thermostat. The diesel has the pump one end. In red. And the thermostat the other in blue.

Worth noting that the water pump can be changed separately to the cam belt. Often when you get the cam belt done the garage will recommend doing the water pump. Not necessary if all else is good. This does make it much more important to keep the fan belt tight. If yours squeals when cold tighten it now.
