Engine light came on and wont go off.

performance seems lacking, car somehow feels heavyer than what it should be (not enough pull)
before the engine light Stuck "ON" it was doing an odd thing when traveling at 60mph on moterway, it would in the only way i can describe feel like a heart mumer like it skiped a beat for a split second, then there would be a drop in acceleration. to fix it traveling at this speed all i did was let up off the accelerator then put foot back down, this would clear the engine light.

few weeks of this tho, the engine light was stuck in the on postion now. brought it to a mechanic and hooked it up to a computer.
computer reads, "EGR" or "low voltage EGR" basicaly signs point to faulty EGR

Price mecanic want to fix it ... "£200 !!" told him id fix it myself thankyou. Missed out on a brand new EGR on ebay for £49.99 next cheapest is £99 still too pricey so figure id do full service first.

The under side of the throttle looked really black so next step was oil and spark plugs.
i had also noticed looking under the car some oil leakage and found it hard to locate, finaly found it by wiping the oil spill clean and checking the next day, seen a single drip on a bolt, gave it a tighten and it seems to have done the trick. as my oil level seemed to be draining away as i travel to work about a 300 mile trip per week.

The blot in the bottom needed a tighten
Image

When removing the oil filter cap the old filter just fell apart into chunks and bits not a good sign again probably never changed.

Image

Close up of the old oil filter

Image

Full oil drain, and flushed engine with petrol and oil mix
new filter, new fresh oil.
Golden honey colour now instead of dark black, no drop in oil level now either.

Condinsation must be geting in tho cause im geting white gunk on the yellow oil cap dont think much can be done about it at the moment ( or at all ?? )

Created photoshop image of how i expected the car to look like, i actually created this before i sorced the wheels to give an idea if i wanted them or not.
not sure about the window tints i really dont wana go over the top with it so might tone it down. expected plan to respray the body trim matching body colour also plan to add skirts and spoiler. all this will come at much later stage tho. still have to get engine working correctley, make it run smooth like it used too before the engine light and slugish performance.

replaced fuel filter and cleaned EGR

that brings this project up to today ..

Car performance is at its worst today, Kangaroo jumpy when driving at 30mph, odd reving "hunting" at 2000 rpm really at a loss at this stage,
i had the EGR valve on and off 6 times.

cleaned original EGR - no joy
tried 2nd hand scrap yard EGR - no joy
tried another 2nd hand scrap yard EGR - even worse
tried to blank it off with a coke can and reattach original EGR - no joy
replaced original EGR with no coke can - no joy

im now at a loss what is causing the car to run so bad, i dont think its fit for road use with the way its jumping around like a learner driver.
as a last ditch resort tried swaping the direction of the fuel filter but also no joy.

its geting towed into a mechanic 2mora and il let him figure out what may be wrong.
it could all be down to a combination of parts normaly these parts are,,

Air flow meter,
EGR vavle,
Coil pack,
Lambda Sensor

if been told other sensors also come into play here and it really is hard to pintpoint its like a needle in a hay stack each car is sligtly different
i jus want my car running smooth again like it used too then i can tinker with the rest myself and get to work on the cosmetic fixes like rust spots and paint job myslef.

time will tell what was causing the problem, then il continue this project.

Cheers mate

After removing and cleaning the EGR 6 times, left it into a mechanic today, had to get a tow out the road, no power at all to drive.
Mechanic told me today that it was the airflow meter, that he tried a different one and it work fine.

so hopefully get it back asap, then becusae i used liquid gasket on the EGR, i might order a new gasket again and refit it make sure its properley sealed, neat and tidy.

Mechanic changed the airflow meter, he said a filament was gone on it, but as i went to drive out of the yard it was still jumping. Charged £70 to replace it for new.

he suggested the idle controll unit might need replaced as well..

i have my doubts about him tho because when i pointed to the EGR vavle he said .. "thats not the EGR thats the idle valve"
so i pointed to the idle valve next to the throttle body and he said "that controls the fuel" and if you removed it "its probably all up the left"
When i checked the Haynes Manual i was in the right.

All seems strange to me at the moment dono what to do for the best. At the moment as im flying off to london for a few days and need a working car by next monday, i feel best to leave it with him come back on saturday and see what the craic is.

Does anyone want to shine a bita light on this matter or thoughts ?

Back from london, mechanic wasnt answering his phone and its Sunday 2mora with work Monday morning. At this rate il be staying with the parents next couple of days. I feel like lifiting the car from him, ordering the parts cheaper online and fitting myself, could kick myself for not ordering them when i was in London then i could have at least fitted them on Sunday and prayed they fixed my Engine running problems.

Hopefully il find out more info soon, but as it stands, car still jumping around like a learner driver. just not running right at all. cant wait to get it back running smooth, then can start on some cosmetic mods.
