Hissing sound?

Post by tonyhugill »

I can hear a loud hissing type sound when I accelerate. I have a 1.4 8v 1998. I've checked the air filter box and all the pipes from and to it. When I took the filter box out I noticed the alternator belt isn't central on the tensioner. It over hangs it by a good 5 or 6 mm. May not be related but thought I'd mention it any way. Any advice would be appreciated greatly. Thanks to those that helped with my other problem.

Check the exhaust, a blown exhaust can hiss like a.prick

Easiest way to check is when Cold put the palm of your hand over the tail pipe so it's air tight and you'll be able to hear if it's blowing or not

Check intake piping aswell
If it doesn't fit,
force it,
If it breaks,
It needed replacing anyway

I'll check them later, it seems to idle high, about 1800, when I first start it. Could this be linked?
