1.4 gearbox removal

Post by tonyhugill »

Does anyone have a link to a tutorial to remove the gearbox on my 1998 1.4 corsa?. Looked through the Haynes manual but someone said its a bit long winded and half the stuff it says isn't necessary. Thanks

Haven't done it personally but i would guess just pull the drives from gearbox, unbolt from engine, undo gearbox mounts watch it hit the ground :P or have someone lower it down slowly lol.

You will need to support the engine

1 remove the wheels
2 remove bottom ball joints
3 pop out the drive shafts
4 undo the gear linkage
5 remove the speedo cable or unplug the connection
6 place jack under the sump
7 undo the bolts around the bell housing
8 undo the gearbox mounts
9 get ready to catch the box will then slide out

Thanks for the replys, from what's been said it seems much easier than the Haynes manual makes out, I'll have a bash at it next week and let you know how it goes.

I find it better to remove the drive shafts by undoing the 30mm nuts as it gives more room and drop the anti roll bar its a bit more work but gives you more room to get the box in and out

If my gearbox has the inspection plate where you can change the clutch without removing the box, where abouts would it be?

Think so you need to remove the gear box end cover on the input shaft you should see a circlip and a 7spline head bolt remove the circlip and bolt then
With a slide hammer pull the shaft out
Take off the inspection cover if you have a flat flywheel you should be fine
